Creating a Sanctuary of Calm: The Peach Tree Sensory Room Project

CRi is developing a therapeutic sensory room at Peach Tree, one of our homes for individuals with behavioral challenges. This innovative space will provide a calming environment where individuals can regulate their emotions and reduce anxiety through sensory modulation.

Creating a Sanctuary of Calm: The Peach Tree Sensory Room Project

At CRi, we are committed to providing innovative and person-centered support to individuals with diverse needs. One exciting initiative underway is the development of a sensory room at Peach Tree, a home specifically designed for individuals with behavioral challenges. Led by Program Manager Maxwell Osei Anokye and Clinical Director Dr. Bright Fleku, this project represents a significant step forward in our ability to provide therapeutic support and enhance the well-being of those we serve.

Peach Tree is home to individuals who often exhibit challenging behaviors as a way of communicating their needs and emotions. These behaviors can include aggression, self-injury, and interpersonal conflicts. The sensory room is designed to provide a safe and therapeutic space where individuals can regulate their emotions, reduce anxiety, and develop coping mechanisms.

The Power of Sensory Modulation

Sensory rooms are grounded in the understanding that sensory input plays a crucial role in regulating emotions and behavior. By providing opportunities for individuals to engage with sensory stimuli in a safe and controlled environment, sensory rooms can help reduce anxiety, improve focus, and promote self-regulation.

The idea for the sensory room stemmed from the success observed in another CRi home. Recognizing the potential benefits, upper management championed the project, and a dedicated team, including Maxwell Osei Anokye, Program Manager, and Dr. Bright, Clinical Director, have been instrumental in bringing it to fruition.

A Multifaceted Approach

The sensory room at Peach Tree will offer a variety of activities and equipment designed to address diverse sensory needs. Some key features include:

Calming Activities: Soft fabrics, textured surfaces, and calming visuals will provide opportunities for tactile exploration and relaxation.

Active Play: Exercise balls, yoga mats, and resistance bands will encourage physical activity and release pent-up energy.

Creative Expression: Building blocks and art supplies will foster creativity and self-expression.

Sensory Stimulation: A dedicated therapeutic room with a strobe light will offer controlled sensory input for individuals who benefit from visual stimulation.

The sensory room at Peach Tree is intended to be beneficial for the residents of the home, as well as open to the wider CRi community. Individuals from other CRi programs who may benefit from sensory modulation will have access to this valuable resource. This inclusive approach reflects CRi's dedication to providing comprehensive support to all individuals we serve.

This project represents CRi's commitment to providing innovative and person-centered support. We envision a space where individuals can find solace, develop coping skills, and experience a greater sense of well-being. With the support of our community, we can create a sanctuary of calm that will make a lasting difference in the lives of those we serve.

The sensory room is an ongoing project, and CRi is actively seeking donations to fully equip the space. Any contributions will ensure that the sensory room has a wide range of equipment and activities to meet the diverse needs of the individuals we support.
